The Sikh Coalition Seeks Legal Interns

For Spring 2010 - Bay Area & New York
The Sikh Coalition is a community based organization that defends civil rights and civil liberties
in the United States, educates the broader community about Sikhs, and fosters civic engagement
amongst Sikh-Americans. The organization owes its existence in large part to the effort to
combat uninformed discrimination against Sikh-Americans after September 11, 2001. The
Coalition's Legal Program provides direct legal services to Sikh victims of hate crimes,
employment discrimination, profiling, school bullying/harassment, and other forms of
discrimination. We have an active caseload of civil rights matters in federal courts throughout
the United States.
The Sikh Coalition's Legal Program seeks 1-2 law students to serve as interns during the
summer of 2010. Qualified legal interns should have a passion for social justice and civil rights,
a strong work ethic, and excellent legal research, writing, and analytic skills. Legal interns will
receive hands on experience:
· Conducting legal research,
· Writing research memoranda,
· Drafting legal briefs,
· Interviewing clients or witnesses, and
· Assisting with litigation and casework.
Accepted interns are required to work a minimum of 40 hours per week for 10 weeks during the
summer in either the Sikh Coalition's Bay Area (Fremont) or its New York City office. (Both
offices are easily accessible by public transportation.) Split summers may be available. Past
legal interns have received academic credit, and pro bono credit also is available. A stipend may
be available depending upon funding. Nonetheless, the real reward is making a difference in the
lives of people whose civil rights have been violated, while gaining substantive legal experience!
Please e-mail a resume, cover letter, writing sample, and two references to
legal@sikhcoalition.org. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, although we hope to
conclude the hiring process by the end of February.
