NASABA Executive Director
The
North American South Asian Bar Association ("NASABA") seeks an experienced
individual to serve as its part-time Executive Director, to assist in the coordination
and direction of the operation of the organization.
The Executive Director will report directly to the NASABA President and its
9-member Executive Committee (the "EC") and may be required to supervise
an Executive Assistant and volunteers. It is expected that the Executive Director
will devote 15-20 hours per week on average to his/her job duties. The Executive
Director will have the following general responsibilities

Narika
Narika
is a domestic violence helpline for South Asian women that receives requests
for help and information from over 2000 callers (both within the U.S. and internationally)
every year. For more information about Narika, please visit narika.org.
Narika seeks a legal intern entering either the second or third year of law
school to assist us in addressing family and immigration law issues affecting
our clients.
The intern, under the supervision of attorneys from the law firm of Murphy,
Vu, Thongsamouth & Chatterjee LLP, will assist with case management, running
client meetings, researching the law, drafting legal briefs and memoranda, corresponding
and communicating with opposing counsels and court personnel and accompanying
with the possibility of representing clients in court appearances. The firm's
focus is to provide domestic violence survivors with legal services in the areas
of immigration, family law and estate planning. The intern will predominantly
work on Narika clients' cases.
The intern will also have the opportunity to help Narika grow and expand its
network of attorneys and attorney referral service. Other projects will include
research and writing focused on the issues of domestic violence, immigration
and family law as they affect the South Asian community.
The internship is a full time 10-week program. The intern will split time between
the law firm located in Oakland and Narika in the East Bay. Narika has secured
a fellowship grant from the South Asian Bar Association Foundation that will
allow the intern to be paid a stipend of $3,000. For further compensation, students
are encouraged to inquire into their school's work-study programs.
