Zahra Shakur Jamal, University of San Francisco, 2011

Employer for Summer 2009: Bay Area Legal Aid

Zahra is pursuing a summer placement with Bay Area Legal Aid to acquire new tools and experiences that will enable me to leverage the legal system to more effectively serve the needy, particularly immigrants and the impoverished. Zahra will be working in the Family Law Unit of their East Bay Office, which provides survivors of domestic violence legal services including immigration-related assistance under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). As a Law Clark, Zahra will be engaged in research and writing, including drafting declarations and developing pleadings, and will work directly with clients. Bay Area Legal Aid serves low income clients, including a sizable portion of Asians.







Rosha Jones, UC Berkeley School of Law, 2011

Employer for Summer 2009: ACLU of Northern California-San Francisco

Rosha will be working in the Legal Department of ACLUNC. Her duties will include legal research and writing, and drafting of court papers for ACLU-NC's legal cases. Additionally, Rosha will attend appellate arguments, trial proceedings and depositions. Rosha will also perform client intake, complaint resolution, and fact investigation for new cases.









Roxana Rezai, University of Washington Law School, 2010

Employer for Summer 2009: ACLU Immigrants' Rights Project (IRP)

Roxana will be working at a legal internship working in all aspects of the IRP's impact litigation suits which are aimed at protecting the guarantee to judicial review, enforcing fair employment practices, maintaining constitutional safeguards against detention practices and biased asylum adjudication, assessing post-9/11 policies and practices, anti- immigrant ordinances, and public and private discriminatory practices targeting immigrant groups.









Sushil Jacob, UC Berkeley School of Law, 2011

Employer for Summer 2009: Communities for a Better Environment, Oakland CA

Sushil will be working with Communities for a Better Environment (CBE), a California nonprofit that is using litigation to fight for access to a clean environment where people live, work and go to school. He will be providing legal research and assistance on the statewide climate justice campaign and on two cases related to the Powerplant Campaign.
Sushil is interested in promoting sustainable economic development strategies that combine environmental justice litigation and green-collar jobs.







Kishan Barot, UC Davis School of Law Class, 2011

Employer for Summer 2009: Contra Costa County Public Defender's Office

As a law clerk, Kishan will do legal research and write motions and memoranda on issues ranging from the Fourth Amendment to juvenile delinquency law. He will also have the opportunity to do client intake interviews and observe trials.










Menaka Fernando, UC Hastings College of the Law, 2010

Employer for Summer 2009: Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office

This summer, Menaka will be helping indigent defendants in LA County by assisting trial attorneys in numerous ways: providing research; writing pre-trial motions and sentencing memorandums; and working in the courtroom during arraignments, hearings and trials.










Leeja Patel, UC Hastings College of the Law, 2011

Employer for Summer 2009: Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach and Narika (for the APILO/ Narika Fellowship)

Leeja will participate in traditional legal casework such as memo drafting, client interviews, court visits, and research and writing primarily focused on issues of domestic violence, immigration law, and family law, as well as broader advocacy work including community organizing and outreach, all intended to serve the needs of the Asian Pacific and South Asian community.
